2002 from Head Not Found Records – bindrec@seznam.cz

Carnal Diafragma / Ulcerrhoea split 7” a great grooving gore, porn and grind 7” mostly for fans of DIY grind on Cz’s Beer Is Not Drink records. Carnal Diafragma follow up their impressive debut Preparation of the Patients for Examination with a strong 3 song recording from 2002. I liked it before, I like it more now. Lots of catchy 2 chord beer-hall riffs keep things moving along at a nice pace breaking into blasts with tasteful restraint. Carnal Difragma writes songs, not just strings of riffs. Fans of GUT and Purulent Spermcanal need to hear this. Compared to the CD that featured many samples and goofy smoke outs, the 3 songs here are much more a straight ahead grooving grind. A bit of post GUT high vocals help show what Carnal Diaragma is all about. This is one of the more fun porngrind bands going. The much more sober sounding Ulcerhhoea is a DIY infectuous grind project that always delivers. The no frills blasting grind with a touch of socially conscious lyrics tempt me to call this crust or mince but labels are just excuses. Ulcerrhoea just plain rock. Not much changes here on this 2002 recording. 7 tracks grind fast furious. Nothing new or humorous here like Carnal Diafragma, just scorching grind done the right way with the right sound. Most definitely worth your $5.

Cerebral Turbulency – Germ of Error - There are so many grind bands coming out that people are looking for reasons to ignore bands. How much Cz grind do you need? Me, I can’t get enough. In the past, C.T. have made an art of alienating fans - inconsistent releases and almost no U.S. press meant, until now, Cerebral Turbulency was almost totally ignored. Germ of Error will now make it extremely hard for fans to ignore this band. The sound quality is first rate as C.T. is now a mature band at the top of their game. They are not polished to the point of sterility (see Nasum) and not a mushy sloppy mess. The CD has a great live feel and having witnessed them live I can say – yes – they pull it off live. In maturing, they have lost none of the raw power and caustic vigor that is essential in grind. Germ of Error shows they have fresh ideas to spare. Keep your bong packed. Changes in composition come at a frenzied pace but with no sacrifice to good arrangements. 13 tracks fly by on the MCD in a hurry, leaving you wanting more. This is just the kind of grind I dig: it’s smart, savage and never boring. A must for fans of Cz. grind or creative and fierce music in general. My opinion is in no way clouded by the fact that the singer is a Y chromosome away from being Lisa Loeb. Fresh, fierce and fun – Cz grind at it’s best.

CRUCIFIRE - Unblessed Unto Hatred - TAPE
FAST SATANIC DEATH
W OLD SCHOOL FEEL

The Unholy Redeemer
Unblessed Unto Hatred
Domain of the Haunted

Members of ENCABULOUS have teamed up with a bloke from RANDOM VIOLENCE to form CRUCIFIRE. This tape is awesome in every way. The logo and coverart make it look like it came from the tape trading days of the underground. The music is dark and brooding with a strong oppressive old school atmosphere, blasting tight death broken up with doomier evil riffs. It's like Immolation meets Krisiun. The drumming sets a blistering pace, the vocals are deep and full roaring, the riffing is economical but fantastic, ominous and full of mood and the songwriting is old school death fare. The production sounds great, it's got that real 90s demo sound. Turn it up and be evil and street credible because you ordered this tape because you are a true underground warrior. God I love this shit. Order it immediately and impress yourself with your awesome taste in music, listening to true death metal the way it is meant to be played. CRUCIFIRE have stated that they will not rush to put out more material but promise to maintain a high standard, so there might be a wait between releases but rest assured anything coming from this band will be essential. I can picture Andi and Hacker from UNHOLY TERROR zine listening to this tape and their balls exploding with joy. I played it in the van for an 18 year old kid at work, and he kept turning it up and headbanging, saying it was good to see there are still old cunts around who listen to this shit. Even the heathen youth of today in their baggy pants and backwards hats recognise that CRUCIFIRE is fucking grouse. Anyone who doesn't should be tied to an inverted cross and whipped to death. Order immediately and prepare to revel in old school satanic death metal glory.

Macabre Realms Of Inhuman Bestiality
Ravenous Funeral Carnage

Excremential Lust
Boiling Vomit Through My Veins (5 Meg)

Running Time 34:11

This CD did nothing for me for the first three listens, then suddenly it was like someone turned on the power to my brain and I could appreciate it for the masterpiece that it is. 'Necroholocaust' is the finest release from one of the most lauded bands in the underground. They have finally managed to package their sickness with a fitting production, and the material is more mature than in the past, more properly honed with the same over the top energy but well crafted songwriting and attention to the flow and mood of the songs. The production is crackly with distortion but very warm also, kind of like REINFECTION leaning a little towards the 'Forensick' production job would be one way of describing it. Imagine if you had been able to actually hear the riffs on 'Forensick', but reduce the CARCASS influence in favour of a more old school death metal feel in terms of moody riffs and shit. Considering this is basically fast deathgrind, it's worth noting that it doesn't sound like anyone else. The flamboyant over the fucking top vocals are of course in full force, and the extreme sense of mind-bending horror is pervasive as always, the hilarious mythology of "death grind gore warriors" upheld with song titles like "boiling vomit through my veins." Struth. That's an image that'll stay with you a while. Apparently the coverart had to be redone several times to satisfy the label, I would love to see the other proposed covers. The one they went with is cool, I like the way the album title is made up of bits of people.

Anyone who says they'd prefer it if this release shared the production of 'Forensick' is just trying to sound tough and overlooking the fact that as Nico kindly explained to me, 'Forensick' is great if you turn it up, headbang wildly and pretend you can hear riffs. Perhaps the CD should have come with those instructions. 'Necroholocaust' not only addresses these problems, it pisses all over anything else DISGORGE has done, and much of the rest of the scene besides. This CD is essential and will be considered an absolute classic long after we have all decayed into bubbling pools of pus in our coffins. This CD will get you so excited you'll feel compelled to pull over at horrific traffic accidents and masterbate furiously onto the screaming trauma patients as they writhe on their stretchers. It's THAT good.

NO ESCAPE brings us this split CD. I won't wax lyrical about how grouse this label is, just go to their site and order everything they put out and you'll be right. This split features some of the best material to date from either band, and you'd be hard pressed to find any fan of these two bands who is not impressed by this release. Good value, good stuff, get it if you haven't already got it on order. The artwork is once again done by Sacha of CBT, I reckon it's sub-par compared to the other work he's done for the label, but does the job.

The FID material is better than their debut, with stronger songwriting (they all feel like songs this time) and a lot of work has gone into the vocals and vocal patterns - hilarious and brutal stuff as you would expect. More melody in the riffs and through the songs. The eight FID tracks clock in mostly just under one and a half minutes. Good track length for this style of fairly original and attention-grabbing grind, it gets in there and delivers a few good ideas and gets the fuck out before it can overstay it's welcome. The songwriting has the obvious grind backbone with melodic death and brutal death influences tastefully done. I like where the guitar sits in the mix, it's clear but not overbearing and the squawks are there but don't stick out like dogs balls. There's a movie sample at the start of track 6, otherwise they get on with the music without fucking around. Work has gone into the vocals and it shows, there are a few variations on the vocal style incorporated and the vocal patterns are well thought out and executed.

The ENGORGED material is pretty diverse, but it's all great stuff.
The first track 'alien contamination' is epic deathgrind with a massive intro, and what sounds like movie samples throughout (but could have been done in the studio) of monsters attacking people and shit. They credit goblin with songwriting for the end of the track, which I guess is the movie sample, I don't know. Track 11 turns into a BLOODDUSTER homage halfway through, great stuff, and track 12 is like MACABRE meets THE ACCUSED, which works for me big time. Track 13 is deathgoregrind with a massive delivery and huge vocals, like SQUASH BOWELS finer moments.

GRUESOME STUFF RELISH - Last Men In Gore
GRIND

36 Tracks in total

TRACK 2:
Broken Gravestones (3.68 Meg)

Running Time 36:16

The coverart and layout are superb, it looks like horror movie poster art. This release features 36 tracks from various sessions, put out by GSR on their own label Motosierra Records. The first 5 tracks are new (recorded Jan 2003) and previously unreleased material. The delivery is particularly venomous, the guitar has a little more colour and they have perfected the mix and production - these five tracks are the best recorded material from GSR to date, could have been released alone as an MCD which would have been lauded by the underground, and suggest great things from their forthcoming second full length on RAZORBACK RECORDS due early 2004. I'm hoping they will maintain the quality of the production job on these tracks and continue to polish their songwriting and delivery. There's only so far you can go I guess with the style of grind GSR play, but there is something sharper and more vibrant about this most recent material, and as mentioned earlier the riffs have a hint more character which makes your ears prick up when compared to the rest of GSR's material.

Tracks 6 - 18 were recorded DEC 2000 for the 'Last Men Alive' EP which failed to see the light of day, and these tracks appear here for the first time. It's basically more of what you got on 'Teenage Giallo Grind,' their debut CD on Razorback.

Tracks 19-36 are from the long sold-out 'Brothers In Gore' split CD with BRUTALITY REIGNS SUPREME, originally released in 2001 by Bizarre Leprous Prod. This stuff is the first ever recorded by GSR, remastered along with the 'Last Men Alive' tracks for this release. Great stuff, and it's cool to see the progression of the band from their earliest material to the present day. GSR have put this out to keep fans of the band happy while waiting for their next full length CD. It certainly does the job, there's a lot of stuff on here and it's all good. Recommended.

HUMAN MINCER - Embryonized
SUB-PAR US STYLE

Cerebral Torture
Death By Infestation Of Grubs (4.65 Meg)
Repugnant Desire
Embryonized
The Edge Of My Perversion
Putrefact Agony
Son Of Decay
Cannibal Resurrection
Filth's Creator

Running Time 30:09

Fairly forgettable brutal death in the US vein. There's a SUFFOCATION influence and even stronger CRYPTOPSY, and some twangy bass and slamming pit groove parts (badly done DYING FETUS) which spoil it a bit. The rest is mediocre ultra brutal death of varying tempos with riffs that do the job but nothing too exciting. Halfway through this disc has outstayed its welcome. The vocals are cool ultra deep and brutal bringing Lord Worm of earlier CRYPTOPSY to mind, with some higher (inhaled?) pig squealing at times. The cover art has people trapped in walls of ropey goo - probably the most done-to-death cover art concept in the genre. Looks cool though. I like the way it looks like it's been done with felt tip pens, instead of the usual airbrushed HR GIGER look (Wes Benscoter, Zig and so on.) The band logo really shits me, it looks fucking horrible, (on their website you can see their original logo on their first demo was a cool one) and what the hell does "Embryonized" means anyway? It sounds like something Jamie Oliver would do to skinned fruit using a blowtorch to create some kind of dessert.

HUMAN MINCER fail to stand up to the inevitable scrutiny which comes from covering ground so familiar to fans of brutal US death. It does become more bearable with repeat listens but it also becomes increasingly clear that they could have trimmed each track down to a third of the duration by dropping needless repetition. Said repetition and lack of any real attention-grabbing ideas means this disc simply cannot go the distance. They play more mid paced at times but it feels like it's because they think they're supposed to, and it's tiresome. Instead of enjoying the eventual blasting you're filled with relief that the slower parts are done for a few bars, then disappointment that the riff over the blast is so boring and unimaginative. Maybe if they stripped it right back to 90 second songs (at the most) went hell for leather with the speed and made things a bit more fun they would be like a DISAVOWED/PYAEMIA type band to listen to but with a warmer sound. As it stands don't waste your time unless you're a compulsive collector of anything and everything with the US brutal death metal sound.

The lo-fi grind NEUROPATHIA showcased on the split with VAMPIRIC MOTIVES* shit me to tears, I could not get past the production and dismissed the band on that basis. This their debut CD 'Graveyard Cowboys' blew me away. It's cleanly produced catchy Polish goregrind, bristling with energy and as much character as early PUNGENT STENCH. The songs are memorable, the songwriting intelligent, there are slower riffs which add a great feel and the blasting is ferocious. I love that well produced goregrind sound, everything's awash with that grubby distortion and when the blast kicks in you keep thinking it's going to pop the paper cones out of your speakers. Cool varying vocals with occasional extreme goregrind roaring of the calibre of SQUASH BOWELS round out the package. It's impossible to avoid getting caught up in NEUROPATHIA's contagious enthusiasm and delirious sense of humour. To sum it up this strikes me as the goregrind equivalent of PUNGENT STENCH and BLOOD DUSTER's finer moments. The sleeve art is kind of dumb with photos of the band in suits hanging around in front of a graveyard. But who cares when the music's this good.

Released 2003

3 bands that don’t belong together combine to make a great release. The cover art by Jake from Tales From Uranus tells it all: A pile of bodies surround a bloody refrigerator and are juxtaposed by a well trimmed fern……goofy and gory. Gorerotted starts the CD with a fairly typical style of death grind. Somewhat of an old school feel is well heard courtesy of great production. This is not my type of stuff but they do what they do quite well. “Fuck Your Arse With Broken Glass” is by far the best track as their following tracks lack the balls-out intensity of the opener. I was singing Hetfield/Cher style moans to “Carrion Smelling” and that is not a good thing. The opener is enough to redeem the other tracks but I prefer when Gorerotted stays away from their brutal death leanings. The intensity gets dialed up with GSR as they grind their way through 5 post-Carcass style death-grind tracks. This is very solid stuff accented by great guttural vocals. The strength in GSR is their ability to lay down a heavy groove while never resorting to pit-riff boredom. There is nothing immediately jaw dropping about GSR but they are tight and catchy and will appeal to fans of Haemorrhage and obviously – S.O.S. and R.O.P. era Carcass. If Gorerotted knocks you on your ass and GSR kicks you when you are down, Gronibard continues the savagery by jerking off on your face before you can get up. Nothing more French has ever existed. You could eat baguettes from the Eiffel Tower with a foul smelling man licking your asshole and it would not be as French as Gronibard. Rocking out with their cocks out and a smile on their faces is what these goofy grinders are all about. But don’t take them too lightly - Gronibard is funny but they are much more than a well-played joke. Absurd grind assaults your dilated orifices with thick and catchy barbed grooves that immediately shred whatever they penetrate. The sound is great as is the case with all 3 bands on this release. They have matured well beyond their Frankensperm days and are now a full sounding assault. Gronibard is not for everyone and if the idea of a French man in a dress playing grind sounds too gay for you then it’s your loss. This band just plain kicks a lot of ass. The material here is really heavy porn-grind with fairly sophisticated arrangements that bring the grooving originality to the forefront. The vocals range from guttural to goofy and continue the absurdist throbbing vein that Gut started not so long ago. A well-selected cover of Rotten Sound’s “Stages” helps to prove the band’s ability to keep it heavy and fierce. If you’ve ever gotten a hummer on No2 then you will understand Gronibard. Gronibard IMO is the real highlight of this split and of the genre in general – the fern hanging above the gore. There is something for everyone here but I can’t imagine anyone really getting into all 3 of these bands. Nonetheless - it’s well worth the coin. Buy it from the bands if possible because they deserve it.

USER NE - Tarantos
POO

Acoustic guitar instrumentals predominate, sometimes there's female vocals. This might appeal to serious muso guitar heads. My wife likes it. I think it's gay. This CD opens with some great well played acoustic guitar. It's fast, tastefully done and holds your interest. They should have quit while they were ahead and left the whole CD as a guitar instrumental. But no, it launches into over the top goth rock opera complete with overuse of flute and bagpipes. Give me a fucking break. And to take the cake the vocal arrangements really push their luck with some stuff that sounds like a sea shanty in Spanish and the guy's laughing "ho ho ho" at the end of each line. They try to create atmosphere with dark goth death in parts with deep gothy vocals and heavy guitar, but the riffs are so predictable basic and crappy that the whole thing is laughable and a chore to listen to. I think I heard two fast deathmetal riffs in one track, but the singer from SISTERS OF MERCY moaning about his haemmorhoids distracted from any pleasure this might have brought me. Some of the female vocals are well done and in the vein of THE 3RD AND THE MORTAL, possibly appealing to fans of this style. It would be a stretch for me to imagine any but the most rabid fan of SEPTIC FLESH, ORKRIST and similar goth death/rock finding USER NE a rewarding listen. USER NE push their luck with overly pompous bullshit and are the musical equivalent of dropping bad acid and settling in to watch a demented 3 hour pantomine about the history of low points in angsty University student poetry, as performed by retarded English drunks and fat moles with droopy tits, mannish faces and those ratty goth dresses. Cunts.

VERMINOUS play generally fairly fast death metal in the vein of early ENTOMBED (and to a lesser extent DISMEMBER and maybe GRAVE at a stretch,) with chaotic early Morbid Angel style soloing and intelligible harsh death/black vocals. The disc opens with a keyboard intro which sounds like something from a John Carpenter film, and satan-related samples of dialogue from old (70s and prior) horror films used as song intros maintain this theme throughout the disc. The spikey driftwood logo is cool and the unholy religious artwork on the cover is awesome. The harsh and raw but very pleasing production grabs your attention immediately, they seem to have deliberately gone for the early ENTOMBED production, which adds an excellent old school feel. This coupled with great scary old school death riffing (again calling 'The Left Hand Path' to mind) makes for a ripsnorting satanic early 90s death metal release which you'll be filing next to your PAGANIZER cds in the nostalgia section of your collection.

More and more bands seem to be looking back to the classic death metal of the 90s for their inspiration, trying to recapture that awesome feel. VERMINOUS have succeeded admirably.
